OUR STORY

From Rural Kenya to the Heart of Baseball

Crafted in Massachusetts. Rooted in Kenya. Built for the Game.

At Rutto Bats, our story begins not on the baseball diamond, but on the red soil of rural Kenya, where founder, Rutto, grew up immersed in a culture of craftsmanship, resourcefulness and community. While he didn’t know of baseball growing up, his childhood was filled with soccer, running and honing his skills working with wood and raw materials on the family farm. Those early years taught him patience, discipline, and that with the right approach you can turn any obstacle into an advantage. That mindset is called Jua Kali. In Swahili, it means fierce sun, but to Rutto it means rising up to the challenge. Little did he know, these early lessons would lay the foundation for his future in baseball.

AN UNEXPECTED BEGINNING

The Game Finds Its Way

In 2005, Rutto moved to the U.S. for college.

His first job in America was as a groundskeeper in New Britain, Connecticut, where he found himself surrounded by baseball fields, grooming the dirt and caring for the grounds where games were played. At the time he didn’t understand the game, but the experience left a mark on Rutto, a spark that would ignite much later in his life

2016–TODAY

The Birth of Rutto Bats

Rutto’s path led him to the U.S. Army and a career in healthcare, but it was in 2013, when he volunteered at a lumber mill in Western Massachusetts, that his life took an unexpected turn towards baseball. There, he learned that the wood dowels he was crafting were baseball bat billets—raw materials for some of the most renowned bat manufacturers in the world. With a newfound connection to the game Rutto discovered his passion for baseball and the sport’s relatable lessons of resilience, teamwork and a strive for excellence.

In 2016, Rutto and his wife purchased the mill and in 2020, Rutto Bats was born.
